Netball vs Stopsley and Denbigh

As the year is drawing to a close, and we begin to say goodbye to our Year 6 superstar Netballers, Mr Horton is looking ahead to seek out the future stars of our team. This has involved taking the children to Stopsley and Denbigh to take part in football and netball matches.

Stopsley – The girls first faced off against a local rival of ours in Stopsley, the home of former St Matt’s star Mr Dymock. The Owls started very strong with some good play from Hana and Aysha working the ball up the court towards the hoop. Solid in defence as always Courage and Husna kept the Stopsley side away from our hoop, winning the ball back with some key interventions.

Player of the match Miriam scored an amazing three points to take control of the game. With Angella and Hana making their debuts for the Yr5 and 6 team they both performed well and learnt a lot from the encounter.

Chioma, with her height and strength, constantly won the ball back for our team and put us on the front foot creating more scoring opportunities.

Final score was 7-3 to the Owls.

Words from Mr Horton after the game:

“The performance was more pleasing than the final score as they all put in 100% effort and had fun at the same time too.”

Denbigh – The second match saw us take on rivals from across the park Denbigh.

The schools have clashed many times in strong matches in recent years. This game however was very different; the Owls were very strong and played some of their best netball to date winning the game 10-2.

The team played fantastically well, stuck to their opposing players like glue, and didn’t give the Denbigh girls much of a chance. The girls had taken on all the advice from the previous game and stepped up showing off their skills. The team played remarkably well all with a smile on their face too. The Denbigh coach at the end of the game said that our players were amazing, and they truly were.

The team consisted of Amie, Aysha, Chioma, Lidia, Miriam, Ulani, Zahra.

Girls Netball: St Matthew’s 12 Sundon Park 4

On Wednesday 20th March, the St Matthews Netball Girls hosted Sundon Park in their  third game of the season.

The game was played during the school day so a massive thank you needs to go to their teachers for allowing them out to represent the school.

The Owls came out on top winning 12-4 after a hard fought battle in the first half. The girls are really on a roll now playing some great stuff; they have really developed togetherness and a great understanding of how to play as a team. The girls are showing great commitment practising at both break and lunchtimes to ensure they can be the best they can be. This effort and commitment is paying off as they seemed to have the edge on their opponents so far.

A special mention should go out to Ulani who stepped up at the last minute to play and did an amazing job in both defence and attack. Her teacher Mr Rowlands spoke about her focus and it was clear to see that it had sunk in, she did amazingly well.

The Owls Team: Sienna, Asmaa, Tylah-Marie, Natalia, Ulani, Courage, Aysha

Scorers: Sienna (x4), Courage (x2), Asmaa (x2), Ulani (x2), Aysha, Tylah-Marie.

Player of the match: Courage

After the game Mr Horton said,

The girls played really well again, they’re doing the school proud but they must continue to work hard.”

Still to play for the girls are Pirton Hill & Chantry over the next two weeks.

Girls Netball: Hillborough 5 St Matthew’s 9

On 11th March, the Netball girls faced off against one of their biggest rivals — Hillborough.

After being successful in their first game against Bushmead, the Owls were looking for back to back victories to keep their unbeaten record in tact.

The match started very frantically with the girls needing to take a few moments to get into their stride. The girls finished the first quarter level with both teams scoring two points in a very close game between two very good sporting schools.

The girls played tremendously well, competing for the ball and making some vital interceptions to get the ball back. With the ball the girls began to calm down, relax and play the ball up court under control to the shooters. The girls’ shooting was really good having converted most of their chances.

The Owls were first to every loose ball which helped them take the lead going into the final few moments of the match. Hillborough continued to play well and didn’t give up making it a very good game to be part of.

After the game Super Fan Miss Bush said “it was a great match, the girls did really well and they deserved the win.”

The Owls Team: Sienna, Asmaa, Tylah-Marie, Natalia, Alicia, Courage, Aysha

Owls Scorers: Asmaa (x3), Sienna (x3), Tylah-Marie, Alicia & Aysha.

Player of the match: Asmaa

Year 5 Netball Tournament

On Friday 22nd March, St Matthew’s took part in a Year 5 Netball competition between all the schools in Luton.

The event was hosted at Stopsley High School on a cold and windy morning. St Matthew’s were able to enter two teams into the event meaning that 14 of our girls got the opportunity to represent the school.

The standard of the competition was very high with some strong netball being played by all teams.

The Owls had a little head start as they have lots of opportunity to play netball during PE lessons and at break & lunch times.

It was a league format with the winning teams progressing through to a knockout stage. Both Owls teams won enough games to qualify for the knock-out stages. The teams were facing off against strong opposition in Stopsley and Ferrars in the quarter-final. One team comfortably brushed aside Ferrars, having played their best netball of the day, winning the game 5-1. The other side needed extra time and a penalty style shoot-out to settle it against Stopsley. Up stepped Lidia (Otter Class) to score the winning shot.

It was semi-final time and both teams were facing off against each other to see which Owls team would go all the way to the final. It was Team Horton vs Team Campbell.

Although the girls knew each other, they had to put friendships aside for this game as neither teacher wanted to lose. It was an incredibly close game which shows how amazing the girls in St Matthew’s are doing at the moment. Eventually the more experienced side consisting of some Year 6 team regulars came out on top, winning 6-3 to put them into the final.

Final time. The Owls were facing tough opposition in Sundon Park. Both teams had regulars in their Year 5 & 6 school teams so it was going to be a strong game of netball. Sundon Park has some very strong shooters who scored almost every chance they got, meaning they had the edge on the day. The Owls showed great character and attitude by not giving up until the final whistle, eventually losing the final 5-1.

Both teams did amazingly well, I am sure they all enjoyed it and I can say they all got so much better with their netball skills.

Team Campbell: Chioma, Miriam, Lidia, Amie, Maja, Franklina & Angella.
Team Horton: Aysha, Husna, Ulani, Faiza, Mabannah, Courage & Zahra

Very Proud PE Teachers Mr Horton & Mr Campbell

Girls Netball: Denbigh 4 St Matthew’s 2

This season we were lucky enough to enter two teams into the Luton Schools Netball League meaning even more girls get a chance to represent the Owls. This group of girls’ first game was against our friends from across Wardown Park, Denbigh Primary School. The game was very competitive with Denbigh coming out on top with a 4-2 victory.

The game started very well for the Owls scoring two points in the opening six minutes. The points were scored by Maria after some key passes from Daisy & Donna-Karen. Denbigh soon fought back scoring three points in the next two quarters, taking a lead of 3-2 into the final quarter.

The Owls were playing very well and learning so much about the game of netball, Khadija, Karina & Joana made some great blocks and passed the ball up the court well. Amelia & Milly were playing their first game and did very well. Thr whole team competed against a strong Denbigh side, showing great effort and attitude throughout.

Interviews after the game from Daisy, Maria & Joana:

“We had good fun, and thoroughly enjoyed it.”

“We did very well at marking and interception but could have been better at shooting and getting the rebound.”

The Owls Team: Amelia, Daisy, Donna-Karen, Joana, Karina, Khadija, Maria, Milly

Girls Netball: Bushmead 2 St Matthew’s 9

On the March 5th, the girls netball team travelled to Bushmead for their first Division 1 match of the season.  After winning all their previous grading games, the team have earned a place in the top division competing against the best schools in Luton.

The Owls started very strongly with some quality passing and moving from Sienna & Tylah-Marie which led to three goals scored in the first quarter. There was some great play at centre from Asmaa who helped out in both defence and attack.

Bushmead then came into the game in the second quarter with some strong play of their own, but St Matthew’s battled through with great interceptions and marking from Alicia & Aysha. The girls pushed on and kept the ball well with Courage scoring a point to take a 4-0 lead at half-time.

The third quarter started well for the Owls with an early point set up by Natalia, who was running the show at centre. She played in Aysha for her first goal this year.  Alicia also chipped in with a point after a number of chances created by the Owls making the score 6-0 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth and final quarter was a very interesting one with five points split across the two teams, three going to St Matthew’s and two to Bushmead. With some quick strong passing from the girls, and some tight marking in defence the Owls were performing very well.

After the game Mr Horton said “The girls did amazingly well considering it was their first game for over four months. I know they can do so much better and we will continue to work hard over the coming weeks to be the best we can be.”

Player of the Match Sienna and team-mate Natalia said “They had some strong defenders and shooters which made it a good game, and we know what we can do to get better.”

The Owls Team: Alicia, Asmaa, Aysha, Courage, Natalia, Sienna, Tylah-Marie
